Después de los Roosters, Yardbirds, Bluesbreakers, Cream y Blind Faith, el famoso guitarrista y cantante Eric Clapton (nacido el 30 de marzo de 1945) se unió a los componentes de Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, el bajista Carl Radle, el batería Jim Gordon y el teclista y vocalista Bobby Whitlock, para crear los Derek and The Dominos en el año 1970.
El mismo año de su creación el conjunto de blues-rock grabaría en Polydor el doble álbum “Layla and other assorted love songs” (1970), trabajo en el que también aparecía el estupendo guitarrista de los Allman Brothers, Duane Allman, quien toca en la famosa y espléndida canción “Layla”, y George Harrison, buen amigo de Clapton.
Otros cortes de este disco co-producido por Tom Dowd son “Bell bottom blues”, “I looked away” o “Tell the truth”.
La fuerte adicción a la heroína de Eric conllevó la defunción del grupo, que de manera póstuma vería editado “Derek and The Dominos in concert” (1973), un disco en vivo en el cual se recogían grabaciones de directos realizados en el año 1970.
Dos décadas más tarde se publicaría otro álbum en vivo, “Live at Fillmore East” (1994), con grabaciones realizadas en octubre de 1970.
