Sería imposible hablar sobre la escena musical surgida en los 80 en el Noroeste de los Estados Unidos, más específicamente en Seattle, sin nombrar a Mudhoney. Con su sonido, mezcla de punk energético y garaje con toques de psicodelia, se convirtieron en punta de lanza del grunge, movimiento que posteriormente se consolidó encumbrando a formaciones como Nirvana o Pearl Jam.
Nacidos de las cenizas de otras bandas de culto, Mudhoney fue formado en 1988 por Mark Arm (voz) y Steve Turner (guitarra), ambos ex Green River, más el bajista Matt Lukin (ex Melvins) y el baterista Dan Peters (ex Bundles Of Hiss). La banda fue la primera en darse a conocer por el país bajo la etiqueta del mítico sello Sub Pop Records, sirviendo como bandera de la discográfica durante el tiempo que permanecieron en ella.
En 1988 editaron el single “Touch Me I’m Sick”, una canción sucia, cargada de guitarras distorsionadas y gritos, que para muchos es la perfecta definición del grunge surgido de Seattle. Una posterior gira con Sonic Youth, y la edición del EP “Superfuzz Bigmuff” les va abriendo poco a poco camino en la escena alternativa norteamericana. De esta forma comienzan un recorrido más serio y profesional, que se ve incrementado con la edición de su álbum debut, “Mudhoney”, editado por Sub Pop en 1989. A este trabajo le seguiría “Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge” (1991), el último con Sub Pop y uno de los más aclamados de la banda.
Para entonces el grunge arrasaba, y Seattle era el epicentro del rock mundial. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden y Alice In Chains establecieron las pautas y alcanzaron el éxito masivo. Mientras, olvidados por la masa, bandas como Melvins, Screaming Trees y, sobre todo, Mudhoney mantenían a salvo de injerencias externas la más pura ortodoxia del estilo, fresca y genuina. A pesar de que el éxito comercial no llega, no pierden las ganas de seguir, manteniéndose fieles a su esencia. Irreverentes y desenfadados, continúan facturando álbumes intensos y crispados de manera regular: “Piece Of Cake” (1992), “Five Dollars Bob’s Mook Cooker Stew” (1993), “My Brother The Cow” (1995), “Tomorrow Hit Today” (1998), “Since We've Become Translucent “ (2002), “Under A Billion Suns” (2006), “The Lucky Ones” (2008) y "Vanishing Point" (2013).
Décadas después de haber iniciado su carrera, Mudhoney sigue dando guerra, dando por bueno aquello de que quien tuvo retuvo. No hay más que ver cómo se las gastan los de Seattle en directo para darse cuenta de que la edad les ha traído cualquier cosa menos acomodamiento.
